On June 21, Fire Department personnel from Kennedy Park Engine 65
and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) were onsite at the
Salvation Army to present to the
children at the Summer Day Camp.
Fire Department personnel
educated the children on the roles
and responsibilities of firefighters
and provided an overview of the apparatus and equipment. OEM Staff
provided an interactive presentation on “Stop, Cover, and Hold On” in
the event of an earthquake and “Stop, Drop, and Roll” in the event of a
fire. In addition, OEM Staff educated Salvation Army staff on the
benefits of basic lifesaving skills such as hands-only CPR.

On June 24, OEM Staff and volunteers from our Radio Amateur Civil
Emergency Services (RACES) group and local ham radio groups participated
in the National Amateur Radio Field Day 2017. Field Day is an annual event
held on the fourth weekend of June. This event attracts more than 40,000
radio amateurs to operate from remote locations in order to practice their
emergency response capabilities. The intent of the event is for the groups to
contact as many other stations as possible and learn to operate the radio
gear in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. It combines
community outreach, emergency preparedness, and technical skills all in a
single event. Having Moreno Valley RACES participate in events such as this keeps their skills ready for when
a real need arises.

Fire Operations

On June 4, Engine 2 responded to a reported traffic collision with
entrapment located in Council District 3. Upon arrival, firefighters
found a two car traffic collision with three patients, two requiring
extrication. One of the patient’s extricated had major injuries and
another had moderate injuries. A third patient had minor injuries. All
were transported to a local hospital.

On June 9, Engine 91 was dispatched to a reported vegetation
fire located in Council District 4. Upon arrival, firefighters re-
ported approximately 2 acres burning in an open field with no
immediate structure threat. Quick action by firefighters kept the

fire at 4.3 acres with no damage to any property. There were no
injuries to civilians or firefighters. A total of 5 fire engines, 1
Chief Officer for a total of 16 firefighters were committed to this

firefight.
