Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez Commemorates California Native American Day

For immediate release: September 24, 2021

Native American Day - September 24, 2021

Today, Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez issued a proclamation declaring September 24 as California Native American Day in Moreno Valley.

“I am honored to issue this Mayoral proclamation paying tribute to the Native American people who have historically called this region home,” said Mayor Gutierrez. “We must always honor our heritage, and I invite Moreno Valley to take time today to celebrate the historic and cultural contributions by Native Americans."

Moreno Valley has historically been the ancestral land of several Native American tribes, most notably the Luiseño and the Cahuilla. The foothills above the City contain evidence of Native Americans thriving in Moreno Valley for generations, including ancient rock carvings and “granite mortars,” which the indigenous population used to grind acorns and other food.

California Native American Day, celebrated on the fourth Friday in September, is a time-honored tradition commemorating the scores of Native tribes who have lived in California for thousands of years. The statewide event is hosted by the California Tribal Chairpersons Association.

Alcalde Yxstian Gutierrez Conmemora
