MVTV-3 wins first place Beacon Award
City's TV team earns national recognition for second time this year

MVTV-3's Shopping Cart Retrieval public service announcement, which won national recognition earlier this year, has received another national award. The City's government access cable television channel received a first place prize for best public service announcement from the Beacon Award Foundation on Tuesday, December 17, 2002.

"Winning a national award in September was exciting. To win two nationals in the same year is absolutely thrilling," said Media and Communications Administrator, Angela Rushen. "The city's television production staff is a creative, talented group and very deserving of this recognition," she said.

The PSA shows an abandoned shopping cart steering itself through town to a grocery store parking lot. "The PSA shows in a very creative way, that shopping carts can't return themselves to their appropriate place - it's up to people in the community to report abandoned shopping carts or better yet, not to abandon them at all," said MVTV-3's Production Coordinator, Steve Jacobs.

The Beacon Foundation was established to recognize individual and agency-wide achievement in the areas of government access television and communication operations. Their goal is to raise the standards for quality in government access television production through education and an improved exchange of ideas.

The Shopping Cart public service announcement received a total of three awards this year. The City-County Communications & Marketing Association's Silver Circle Award was presented to MVTV-3 in September. The States of California and Nevada Chapter of the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors presented MVTV-3 with a regional "STAR" award for the PSA in May.
