Solar + Battery During a Power Outage
Battery backup, provides emergency power to critical devices during an unforeseen power outage.
Installing battery storage can help you prepare for a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) or other outage. A battery will use stored grid or solar energy to keep your home running when grid power is disconnected.”
Battery storage can provide you additional control over powering your home, allowing you to keep essential devices (such as medical equipment, refrigeration, air conditioning, electric heating, lighting, and electric well pumps) powered during outages.

MVU is considering implanting an incentive program for battery storage.
The expected incentive would be $500/kW, up to $5000 per customer. The cost of adding a 5kW battery to existing solar panels ranges from $8,000-$12,000 depending on the hardware required and the complexity of the installation. MVU customers may also opt to install multiple battery packs to power more appliances or extend the duration that they can stay powered up in the event of an electric service interruption.
Timing Your Usage
The success of solar installations in California has led to an overproduction of solar energy in the middle of the day. Battery storage can help mitigate this issue by absorbing the excess solar energy.
Pairing solar with energy storage systems can help reduce grid demand by shifting solar energy to the early evening peak (4-9pm) hours. Under MVU’s time-of-use rate (TOU) customers would have the opportunity to save money on their monthly energy bills.
Batteries can supply backup power during power outages and help you manage your electricity use to save money. If you have solar, a battery enables you to use more of the ‘green’ power produced by your solar system
